Bojan Says It Will Be Difficult, But Something Up Our Sleeves for Kedah

Ahead of the City Boys’ first away trip in the new Super League season to Kedah DA on Wednesday, the Voice of The City Boys met head coach Bojan for his thoughts on the next opponent, and how things are shaping up for us thus far.

The painful memories of what transpired in Alor Setar in 2021 had not been erased. On that fateful night, the City Boys’ were leading 2-1 with the job almost done and dusted, but to our horror, 3 minutes into injury time, the northerners were rescued with a penalty. Spurred on by that equaliser, 3 minutes later they delivered the unkindest cut, our victory snatched from the jaws of their defeat.

Bojan knows what we will be up against, “Kedah at home is always a difficult team to play, maybe it’s the stadium, maybe it’s the crowd, but it will be a difficult game for us”, he said.

He also commented on the changes in the squad of the northerners compared to before, “Kedah always finds good players. Always good foreigners and they always (have) a good academy. So, young boys will come, older players will go somewhere else, but then suddenly the new boys will come again and they are always talented. They always have this good pool of players.”

Nevertheless he mentioned his technical team studied Kedah’s season opening win at Sarawak U, and believe that we are good for the money.

“We saw the game; maybe they (Kedah) also need a little bit more time, they had lots of changes, so this may give us chance to surprise them on some things”.

Regarding Gallifuoco’s absence for this match following his suspension for the red card vs Selangor last Friday, the 50-year old was unperturbed.

“We have Amad (Muhammad) and Irfan, we’ll play 2 stoppers. They are also professionals, furthermore Irfan is a national player. They too need to earn their salary,” he remarked with a straight face.

The Croatian also lended his support towards Koubemba, with plenty of feedback from the stands and online.

He explained, “There are 2 things you have too notice. Firstly, he’s not a top striker. We’re waiting for Romel to come back, Koubemba is filling in. Secondly, he’s more a winger, but try to understand this : why my midfielders look like they have lots of space? One of the reasons is Kevin (Koubemba) is very mobile. He’s running more than any other player in the team so he creates lots of space for these guys. Honestly for me, it doesn’t matter who’s scoring. I wouldn’t worry even if he doesn’t score all season, but if my midfielders do so, it will be good for the team.”

Finally TVOTCB asked him how the season was shaping up for us thus far after the Charity Cup loss and last week’s opening draw.

“It’s been positive compared to the match before (vs Johor DT). After the Johor game, I mentioned that we weren’t ready. We had some issues, like some players were sick, were injured, things like that. But the last game (vs Selangor) we looked much better of course. We draw positives from that game for the attacking department especially; Defensively we need to improve. But I think that with every game we are getting better, so this is the most important”.
