Only 20, but the Kota Bharu born Nik Umar’s club debut performance during the FA Cup first-round thrashing of M3 (3rd division) side Langkawi City, indicated a level of maturity of someone playing at the peak of his powers.

Albeit the quality of the opponent left much to be desired in the 8-0 win, Nik Umar put on a solid and professional display, together with Gallifuoco in central defence that night.

Speaking to The Voice of The City Boys of his partnership with the Australian, he said “We complement each other on the pitch. Sometimes he goes in for a tackle, and I would be ready to cover him, and vice versa. Communicating with him is seamless and throughout the game, it was easy to understand the way he plays.”

Gallifuoco meanwhile was all praise for the youngster. “Nik Umar has earned his chance by putting down his head and working hard in training. I was proud of him and it is a pleasure to be partnering with him.”

Nik Umar showed that he was a confident young lad with the ball, not afraid to push up and join the attack.

Coach Bojan was also pleased for the newcomer and held up hopes for Nik Umar’s development, “It is good to see a young boy plays like this. Bright future for him ahead.”

Self-reflecting on his own game, Nik Umar explained “I am satisfied with my performance, and to help the team to get a clean sheet is something I can be proud of. However, there were some mistakes during the game, I am training hard to fix them so that I can play better the next time I am put on the field.”
