Revenge? Not In Irfan’s Mind, But We Will Fight Them All The Way

Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium opens its doors once more to our ‘Sampai Mati Kuala Lumpur’ faithful this Wednesday with the visit of champions Johor DT, the first of four matches to play in this busy period of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

While retribution in the Charity Cup was the overriding theme perpetuated by the Johoreans after our 2-0 triumph over them in the 100th Malaysia Cup final; taking a leaf from this blessed holy month, Irfan said vengeance is not on our mind following our 3-0 loss last February.

“For us here, the boys, myself, we’re not looking at this league match as a stage for revenge. But, rest assured, we will give our best on the pitch that night.  Nothing less than 100%”, he said to The Voice of The City Boys.

The Kuala Lumpur born defender explained there were no nightmares from that forgettable night in Iskandar Puteri, suggesting that we now are better prepared, no one reeling from Covid-19 issues or injuries, and we know the opponents well enough. This Super League meeting will be the third encounter between the two sides in over four months.

“In that game, I came on for Kenny and played the second half. So we lost 3-0. But we all know their strengths and we know their quality. It’s up to us at our stadium in Cheras, at our home”.

During his second stint with the City Boys, Irfan also beamed with pride on our 23 match unbeaten run at home.

“Alhamdullilah. This is one of the best memories for me personally from last season that we managed to keep that record going. It’s a personal record for me too as a footballer. Insha’Allah, we shall try our best to preserve this run as a team and for ourselves.

On the progress of his recovery, Irfan was a little disappointed with what the injury caused him but he remained glad that he was on the road to recapturing his form again.

“I was a mixed bag of emotions, to be honest. Sad that I couldn’t feature in the final (Malaysia Cup) for this ankle injury, but happy that we are the 100th Malaysia Cup champs. Maybe I wasn’t fated to play in the final, but Alhamdullilah, The Almighty has given me a lot more, I’m a champ! I am getting better. I progressed faster than the doctors and our physio(therapist) thought which unexpectedly led me to a spot on the list of 20 players during that Charity Cup game”.
