The City Boys’ No.1 custodian, Mendoza, was extremely glad and thankful for our first clean sheet of in the league this year following the 2-0 win over Melaka United at home last Saturday, and attributed the uncharacteristic record of letting in 9 goals in the opening 3 league matches against Selangor, Kedah DA and Johor DT to a combination of bad luck and an unkind fixture list.
“I am very happy and relieved, not conceding any goals against Melaka.
It has been a hard start for us, I think mainly because we had a tough preseason with problems like Covid and injuries, and because we played against the top teams”, he told The Voice of The City Boys.
In 2021, the Filipino national goalkeeper was the bedrock in our defence which only conceded 20 goals in 22 league matches including 7 clean sheets, to be the joint second best backline with Terengganu, but it was in the Malaysia Cup campaign at the end of the year that Mendoza & Co. produced with 6 shutouts that led us to the title.
On the next opponents who came a calling this week at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Mendoza said it could not come soon enough for the City Boys.
“I can’t wait to play another game in front of our fans. Sabah is a good team, so it’s gonna be a tough and probably close game.”
The Super League Match Day 5 fixture between Kuala Lumpur City and Sabah is on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 10PM (2200hrs), in Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras.
