Gallifuoco commended his teammates for a job well done in clinching the City Boys’ first win and first clean sheet in the league this year after the 2-0 victory against Melaka U.
It was a resolute performance in defence for the Australian, who had his father in attendance from Down Under, combining well with Irfan, Declan and Kamal Azizi to bolt our back door shut, almost providing a perfect layer of protection for Mendoza, who was rarely tested throughout the 90+ minutes.
Fondly known as GG among the city slickers, after the initials of his name, Giancarlo Gallifuoco, he had this to say to The Voice of The City Boys after the result on Saturday.
“Means the world to me to have had my dad there to watch us beat Malacca. It was an important win for us as a team, the club and, of course, our fans. For the first time this year, the coach had a closer to full strength squad to choose from and it showed. Incredible effort from everyone, especially our captain who led us to our win with 2 goals.”
The Hang Tuah side stood in our path during the semi-finals of our eventual Malaysia Cup triumph last year, and Gallifuoco was asked of his renewed acquaintance with their star playmaker and forward Haitian international Sony Norde, in the recent encounter.
“Sony is a very talented player with a big reputation here in Malaysia. As a defender, these are the games that you always get excited for. He is a great challenge but defending him is never a one-man show, defending is about all 11 of us, from Romel at the front to Kevin at the back, all working in unison. Which I think we were able to execute well”.
The former Aussie youth international also clarified that as much as this victory mattered much to the City Boys, it will be forgotten as soon as we take field on the training ground.
“Our attitude is and always has been to take things week by week and game by game. Of course, we enjoy our moments of victory, but Monday we will be back on the pitch focussing on Sabah”, he said.
